Blach's Newspapers

Only a few of the Blach's first newspapers were preserved and still exsist. Only those from 1958-1959, the first two school years at Blach. In 1981, the Jabbers Journal was first issued, which ran from October 1981, to June 10, 1994, and it was published 10 times a year. Then came the Falcon Flyer, the first issue of that I was able to locate was from October 18, 1994, and that newspaper still exsists today!

Here are some in depth descriptions of selected newspapers

Vol. 1, Oct. 27, 1958.

This was the very first issue of the Blach newspaper, being only four pages long. They held a contest to see who could name the newspaper. One interesting thing about the first newspaper is that they had a gossip column called "Heard Through the Corridors." It was also very interesting, as stated in one of the articles, that Blach used to own a trampoline!

Vol. 1, No. 2, Dec. 19, 1958.

This is the second issue of Blach's newspaper. The winning name for the paper was "Falcon Files". In it was an article on Blach's honor roll. It states that you need between a 4.0 and 4.6 to be on the "A-" honor roll, and a 4.6 or above to be on the "A" honor roll. Their grading systems were a lot different then than they are now, where if we get a "B-" or higher average you're on the honor roll, where as in 1950 you had to get a "A-" or an "A" to get into any honors at all.

Vol. II Nov. 25 No.

This is the first issue of the second year. The name was changed to "The Falcon". This is a thanksgiving issue, and on the front of the paper, is a prayer about Thankgiving written by a student.

Chrismas Special Edition

The name is changed again to "Falcon". What makes this issue different is that there is no volume, number, or date on it. The whole issue if very religious. Now days, the school wouldn't be allowed to produce such a religious newspaper.

Vol.II March 25 No. 3

The name is changed back to "The Falcon". There is another article about the honor roll and it states that no boys made it on the honor roll that quarter. Also, a majority of the articles were about Blach school sports.

Jabbers Journal. Vol. 1 Blach Junior High School. Oct. 1981.
This is the first issue of the Jabbers Journal.
Here are some interesting facts found in some of the articles in this issue: Article 1:Yearbook Sales: Yearbooks only cost $10!
Article 2:Boogie News: The dance tickets cost $2 if you buy it ahead of time, and $2.50 if you buy it at the door to the dance. They also served Kentucky Fried Chicken and other snacks at the dances.
They had real advertisements and want ads put out by students themselves.
They also had a mystery boy or girl. They would take 1 boy and 1 girl at blach and describe them (e.x. height, hair color, favorite subject, who they hang around with). And you have to try to figure out who the mystery person is. The answers appeared in the following issue.

Jabbers Journal. Vol. 14 No. 7 Blach Junior High School June 10, 1994.
It is the very last issue of Jabber's Journal, and it talks about the eighth grade trip to Washington D.C. and about the eighth grade graduation. They also interviewed teachers to see what they liked to do in their spare time, and they interviewed students to find out what they hated to hear from their parents.
This issue features the Wills and Testaments of the eighth grade students, which still exsist today. A lot of them from older siblings of Blach students today.

Falcon Flyer Issue 1 Vol. 1 Oct. 18, 1994 Blach Intermediate School.
This is the first issue of the Falcon Flyer. One of the articles talkes about the Pajama Dance, and they give homeroom points for anyone who actually comes in their pajamas. They also had a message center, and a Freddie cartoon on the back.
