Dear Falcon Families,

Welcome to the 2026-27 school year at Blach Intermediate School. Staff is excited to welcome our students back- especially our new families who are just beginning their time at Blach.

We want to give you a little bit of information to get you ready for the new school year.

Schedule Day is Friday, August 7th!
Students and their families are invited to pick up their course schedule on Friday, August 7th. We ask that incoming 7th graders come between 9am and 10am. 8th grade students may pick up their schedules starting at 10am.

8th grade Leadership students will be available to give tours of the Blach campus and advise students on the best routes to class. We will NOT be selling PE uniforms at this event. Instead, each student will be given a PE uniform for the year through their PE class/teacher. Extra PE uniforms will be available for purchase- but the first one is given to each student.

Can’t make Schedule Day? No problem. Just be sure your student picks up their schedule in the Blach office anytime after August 8th. You can pick up schedules in the office from 8:00am to 3:00pm (the office is closed on the weekends).

IMPORTANT: We can only give assigned schedules to the student or their family member. If you have someone other than the student or a family member picking up your student’s schedule, you MUST notify us via email of who is picking up the schedule. Essentially, you are authorizing someone else to pick up your student’s schedule.

PowerSchool Information Must Be Filled Completely before a student schedule can be issued.
Last week, in your inbox, you received an email from “noreplyenrollment@powerschool.com”. This IS NOT junk email! Please click on this link and fill out the required information which includes updates on emergency contacts.

If you have already done this, THANK YOU! However, as of this morning, only 290 forms were completed- which means many of our fabulous Blach families haven’t completed this important step.

Please make sure you fill out this critical PowerSchool information. The information you provide (like who is authorized to pick up your student in case of emergency) is essential and we need to have it in our system by the first day of school. We will not issue the student a schedule if the PowerSchool information is not filled out. We will have support staff available at Schedule Day to assist parents/guardians in filling out this information.

Falcon Camp
Blach utilizes the first two days of school, August 12th and 13th, to orientate our students in all things Blach. We call it Falcon Camp! Students will stay with their advisory class those first two days, building relationships, learning about the Blach Way, and getting comfortable with the junior high setting. Falcon Camp is a fun, easy way to ease the transition into the school year.
All students should report to their advisory class teacher and classroom when the first bell rings on Wednesday, August 12th. Students do not begin to follow their 7 period schedule until Friday, August 14th.

School Supplies
A list of basic school supplies is found on our website. Most of these supplies you may already have at home. Once students attend all their classes beginning on Friday, August 14th, they may learn of more specific supplies that are needed depending on the course. However, thanks to LAEF, families are no longer asked for a materials donation in elective classes.

As part of their toolkit for learning, each student is given a Blach student planner and issued a district Chromebook (and charger) on the first day of school. The Blach student planner serves as a place to record daily homework assignments, a calendar, and the school/district policies. It is expected that every student uses their Blach student planner daily. Chromebooks are expected to be taken to and from school daily. Just like they brush their teeth every night, students need to remember to charge their Chromebooks overnight.

First Day of School is Wednesday, August 12th!
School starts on Wednesday, August 12th. ALL Wednesdays are considered “late start”, including the first day of school. The first bell (signaling students to go to class) rings at 9:12am.
Students should report to their advisory class upon the first bell.

Blach’s bell schedule can be found here. It is also posted on the back of the Blach planner- which is given to each student on the first day of school.

Lunch at Blach
LASD continues to participate in the California universal meals program along with all public school districts in the state. For students who wish to participate, Blach provides free breakfast and lunch daily. There is no need to sign-up for this service. The monthly menus can be found on both the District website and Blach’s website.

Many of our students utilize this lunch program. However, many choose to bring lunch from home. Due to our contract with our lunch vendor, no outside food vendors (or deliveries from outside vendors like DoorDash or similar service or parent drop off of local food vendors) is allowed.

Back to School Night
Please mark your calendar for our annual Back-to-School Night for Wednesday, August 26th beginning at 6:30pm. Parents/guardians will travel their student’s schedule, learn about the courses, and get to know the teachers. We will send more detailed information as we get closer to the event.

NEW DATE for Blach’s Pancake Breakfast!
Please note that Blach’s annual Pancake Breakfast is now Saturday, August 29th. This PTA sponsored event is a great opportunity to bring the entire Blach community together. More information to follow but we wanted to make sure you put this new date on your calendar.
Purchase Your Blach Spirit Wear!
Show your Falcon pride by purchasing Blach Spirit Wear! There are a multitude of styles and options in expressing your Falcon fever! From water bottles to sweatshirts, Falcon spirit is strong. You can purchase Blach Spirit wear here.

Attendance/School District Calendar
It goes without saying: you can’t learn at optimal levels if you’re not at school! It is expected that students attend school daily. While some things are unavoidable, like illness or medical appointments, we ask that families schedule time away from school during school breaks that are provided throughout the school year.

The Los Altos School District Calendar provides information about school breaks and minimum days.

When students are going to be absent from school, we ask that you call the attendance line at 650 934-3838 to report the absence. You can also notify the office of the absence using this form found on our website.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions! Looking forward to seeing you all very soon.

Best regards,
Wade Spenader - Principal

New Volunteer Authorization Process

Beginning this school year, LASD is introducing a new Volunteer Authorization Process that provides one consistent system for all school volunteers. The new process builds on procedures already in place for certain volunteer roles and aligns with updated California law and district policy.

To make the process as simple as possible, volunteers are grouped into three levels based on the type of volunteer work they perform. Most classroom volunteers who are always under the supervision of an LASD staff member will complete a straightforward application and tuberculosis (TB) risk assessment or testing.
Volunteers who may work independently with students or transport students (including after school sports) will complete additional requirements appropriate to those roles.

  • An overview of the three volunteer levels
  • Information about whether you are considered a visitor or a volunteer
  • Step-by-step instructions for each volunteer level
  • Links to all required forms and resources

To provide families with plenty of time to complete the new requirements, volunteers will have until December 30, 2026, to complete the authorization process.
