Message from the principal
Dear Falcon Families,

We’ve hit that time of year where you need a jacket in the morning but are sweating in the afternoon.  It’s fall- my favorite season.   Leaves are turning colors, football season is in full swing and our thoughts lean towards the end of the calendar year (and all that entails).

Unity Day is Coming!  Wednesday, Oct. 21st
National Unity Day is next Wednesday, Oct. 21st.  This day brings awareness to our goal of kindness and inclusive, safe environments for all.   We are encouraging everyone- staff, students and families- to wear orange on that day.  Why orange?  Orange symbolizes fall.  It’s a color of warmth and inclusion.  And, it’s a color of safety (think of an orange traffic cone).  On Wednesday, Blach will celebrate unity day to further strengthen our belief that we all have value and belong.

Considering a private high school for 9th grade?

If your 8th grader is applying or considering applying to a private high school for 9th grade, please be sure they attend an informational meeting on Thursday, Oct. 29th in the library at lunch.  At this meeting, I will go over what students must do in order to request letters of recommendation, transcripts and other information.

Blach’s First Dance is Friday, October 23rd!
Our Leadership class is very busy planning our first dance of the year.  Some key points for you to know:
  • Students MUST purchase a ticket in advance in order to attend the dance.  There are NO tickets sold at the door.   This year, tickets must be purchased through PowerSchool (see below).
  • The dance begins at 6pm and ends promptly at 8pm.  Please ensure that your student has been picked up at 8pm.
  • The dance is chaperoned by Blach staff.
  • Behavior expectations will be reviewed with students during advisory next week.  Students who cannot follow those expectations will be removed from the dance and a parent will be asked to come pick up.
Enjoy the crisp weather!

Student Dance - October 23, 6-8pm at the Multi

The Monster Mash
Leadership is hosting the first dance of the school year on Friday, October 23 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM in the Blach Multi. Here is what you need to know:

  • Tickets must be purchased online through the Parent PowerSchool Portal (see below for step-by-step directions).
  • Tickets must be purchased ahead of time to attend the dance. There are TWO types of tickets available to purchase.
  • $10 - Dance Ticket Only
🔸This ticket includes entrance to the dance, carnival games, and a photobooth.
  • $20 - Dance Ticket + Meal
🔸This ticket includes entrance, carnival games, photobooth, chips, drinks, candy, and Senor Lopez’s famous grilled burger (veggie options available).

Please Note: Tickets with meal included must be purchased by Wednesday, October 21. Regular tickets must be purchased by NOON on Friday, October 23.

Tickets are nonrefundable, even if the student does not attend the dance.

How to Purchase Tickets:
Our school has switched to an online payment system which is located in your Student's PowerSchool Account.  You will click the 'Balance' button on the far left menu and see that your student has been assessed two types of tickets:

  1. Dance Ticket Only per student ($10)
  2. Dance & Meal Ticket per student ($20)

To pay, you will click the button located at the top right of your student's PowerSchool screen "LASD eFunds Payment Link".  This will bring you to the online payment site where you will need to open an account with eFunds for the parent payment portal;  Instructions are attached.  Please Note: transaction fees apply per transaction:  $2.95 credit card fee or a $1.50 ACH fee.

Once you are in eFunds payment parent portal, select the ticket type you'd like to purchase, then ADD TO CART.  Students who decide NOT to attend, any unpaid dance assessment fees will be removed from your student's account the following day after the dance.

If you have any questions, Lisa Ma in our front office will be able to help.

Unity Day is Coming Next Wednesday - October 21!

What is Unity Day? Started by PACER’s Bullying Prevention Center, Unity Day is our signature event during National Bullying Prevention Month. It is a day for our school community to come together and send a visible message of kindness, acceptance, and inclusion.

What’s Happening Next Week:
  • Monday & Tuesday: Our Counseling Team will host student activities that lead up to the big day.
  • Wednesday (Main Event): Wear Orange! We encourage all students and staff to wear orange to show that our school stands united against bullying.
Advisory Points: Students who wear orange on Wednesday will earn spirit points for their Advisory class.

Help your student get ready by helping them find their favorite orange shirt or accessory for Wednesday! Thank you for supporting a safe, kind, and inclusive campus community.

New Volunteer Authorization Process

Beginning this school year, LASD is introducing a new Volunteer Authorization Process that provides one consistent system for all school volunteers. The new process builds on procedures already in place for certain volunteer roles and aligns with updated California law and district policy.

To make the process as simple as possible, volunteers are grouped into three levels based on the type of volunteer work they perform. Most classroom volunteers who are always under the supervision of an LASD staff member will complete a straightforward application and tuberculosis (TB) risk assessment or testing.
Volunteers who may work independently with students or transport students (including after school sports) will complete additional requirements appropriate to those roles.

  • An overview of the three volunteer levels
  • Information about whether you are considered a visitor or a volunteer
  • Step-by-step instructions for each volunteer level
  • Links to all required forms and resources

To provide families with plenty of time to complete the new requirements, volunteers will have until December 30, 2026, to complete the authorization process.
LEVEL 1-3

Absences and Appointments

Please let the office know by 9am each day your student will be out by one of the following methods:

  1. Complete the Absence/Appointment Reporting Form
  2. Call the attendance line at 650-934-3838
  3. For last minute appointments, call the office at 650-934-3800 so we can send a dismissal pass to their class. (A parent or someone on your student's emergency contacts list must pick up your student.)
NOTE:  Notifications will be sent out via ParentSquare at 10:30am instead of School Messenger.  You will receive a notification if your student was marked absent and we have not heard from parents regarding the reason.

If you child is going to be late, please drop them off at the front office as they need to sign in and get a pass before they return to class.

Independent Study Plans

  • Each student may utilize a maximum of 15 ISP days per school year
  • Please notify the office of the dates of absence 1 week prior to leaving.  We request advance notice so teachers can prepare materials
  • All Independent Study Plans are subject to principal approval
  • Work MUST be completed during the absence and returned to school on the student's first day back in class
  • Parent to initiate the 2026-27 ISP Agreement form, then we will give the paperwork to the student to get the assignments from the teachers.
